PAN AFRICAN MEDICINES REGULATORY HARMONIZATION - A NEW THREAT TO TRADITIONAL AND NATURAL HEALTH

A newly adopted African Union Model Law on Medical Products Regulation and the establishment of an African Medicines Agency threatens to undermine the sovereignty of all African Nation-States in their regulation of medicines. This scheme, drafted behind closed doors, will significantly boost Big Pharma’s market-share on the continent, and will ensnare Traditional & Natural Health Products, foods and cosmetics into a harmonised regulatory framework.

IMPORTANT REGULATORY ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL DISTRIBUTORS AND SELLERS OF NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTS.

Many companies that sell natural health products have been led to believe by the Medicines Control Council that certain products they may sell (weight-loss and libido products) must be registered or have an application in process on or before the 15th of November in terms of the 'Road Map' circular, or risk breaking the law. What if we told you that the 'Road Map' calling for the registration of CAMS wasn't lawful in the first place, and that you have been duped?

PARLIAMENTARY FEEDBACK - The TNHA spent two and a half hours with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health on Wednesday the 25th of February.

We were pleased with the welcoming reception, and what appeared to be the genuine interest of the Committee in terms of our detailing the current inappropriate regulatory system Traditional & Natural Health Products.

The TNHA made a substantial alternative regulatory proposal, detailing a new policy framework and regulatory structure to separate high risk Biomedical products from lower risk Traditional & Natural Health Products. We hope that the Committee applies it mind diligently when considering the incorporation of Traditional & Natural Health Products in the Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Act and the establishment of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

Listen to the Allied Health Profession's Council representatives (Dr. Craig Wright, Prof. Ashleigh Ross & Dr. Louis Mullinder) present their Council's official position on the future regulation of Complementary Medicine at Parliament.

One would think that these  leading natural health practitioners would be lobbying for the liberalisation of traditional and natural health care, promoting freedom of choice and seeking appropriate regulation for Complementary Medicine in South Africa which is good for growth, innovation and for their patients. Sadly, the opposite seems true. We ask Why?

MEDICINES CONTROL COUNCIL STARTS ENFORCEMENT WITH ARREST OF DOCTOR

A medical practitioner in Limpopo who practices integrative medicine was arrested on Tuesday (09-09-2014) after six Dept. of Health / MCC law enforcement inspectors and police raided his private practice, looking for 'illegal' Complementary Medicines.

They searched his entire premises and interrogated him for 6 hours, and was then criminally charged in terms of the Medicines and Related Substances Act (Act 101 of 1965). He briefly appeared in court the following morning (10-09-2014) and is now awaiting a further appearance in October. The NHA legal team have begun discussions with this practitioner to find out more about the circumstances of the raid, the charges brought against him plus his defence options. All practitioners, retailers and manufacturers should be on high alert and inform the NHA immediately if any further raids like this occur. It appears enforcement has begun. More on this breaking story by the NHA will follow soon

FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO NATURAL HEALTH !

Our rights to natural health are under threat in this country. This since the Department of Health, during November 2013, passed new regulations to control complementary medicines in the same way as pharmaceutical drugs.

According to these new regulations your probiotics will need the same rigorous research as something like Prozac. This is clearly inappropriate and irrational. Complementary medicines are not drugs. They are not used in the same way as drugs are, and they do not carry the same risks...
